This One Moment – One Of Our Favourites
When the bride enters the room and makes her way up the aisle, there is quite frequently a collective ‘gasp’ from the guests. It’s as if all the months of preparations and the tumult of emotions all converge to a single moment in time. Everyone’s eyes are on the bride and her dress. If you had to pinpoint one particular instant which really defines what a wedding is, this would be it.
Our picture above was by Rob – and it became one of our favourites almost instantly. It was taken at Pendrell Hall in Staffordshire. Katy and Tom were the very first couple to hold their wedding ceremony at this newly restored and opened venue, back in August 2013 and we felt very privileged to be photographing it for them.
The reason this has become one of our most popular images is down to the way it captures Katy’s reaction as she gets to the top of the aisle. The emotion of the event simply gets the better of her, so much that she has to partially cover her face with her hand. It is such a simple, honest moment – her dad proud and happy, her mum beaming, her soon-to-be-husband grinning like the happiest man on earth. Even the registrar looks pleased!
When this photograph was taken, it would have been very easy to ‘zoom’ in closer in order to emphasise Katy’s reaction even more. However that would have meant losing the wider context and the image would have suffered for it. Our pictures are very much about telling a story and that invariably means showing at least some of the relevant surroundings. As it is, the picture really gives a feeling of being in that room at the time, with people filling up almost all of the available space and in the middle of all that, is Katy and her dad.
