What we love about photographing weddings at Coombe Abbey
What we love about Coombe Abbey is the sheer range of photo opportunities. The atmospheric corridors, Grand Feature bedrooms and ornate details inside the abbey itself give us something to work with whatever the weather. Outside, the grounds shift from neat formal gardens to waterside walkways to wilder, more natural areas — and that variety means no two sets of Coombe Abbey wedding photos ever look quite the same.
Wedding ceremonies in The Abbeygate
The Abbeygate is where many of Coombe Abbey’s civil weddings take place, with its own stage and bar area making it a private and atmospheric setting for a ceremony. The Courthouse, once the estate’s tennis court, is also licensed for wedding ceremonies and receptions.
Walnut, Stuart & Cloisters
The Cloisters, Walnut and Stuart suites are all within the main abbey building, each with their own character. Walnut — with its deeper, darker feel — works beautifully for both ceremonies and wedding breakfasts. Cloisters, with its more ornate detail, is another great option for a wedding breakfast, while Stuart tends to be used for receptions. The proximity of the rooms to each other also means the day flows well, which is good for candid photography.

Larger receptions in the Marquee
For larger weddings, Coombe Abbey’s marquee sits on the East Terrace and can accommodate up to 500 guests for both ceremonies and receptions, with a minimum of 100 for a wedding breakfast. It has its own private bar and kitchen, and the ivory-lined interior gives it a clean, bright feel that works well photographically. It’s in a more tucked-away part of the grounds with views across open countryside, which also means there are some quieter spots nearby for couple portraits away from the main gardens. The marquee is available year-round.

Small Weddings at Coombe Abbey
Coombe Abbey works really well for smaller and more intimate weddings. The Walnut Room is ideal for the ceremony — its deeper, darker character gives it a really intimate feel — though the Abbeygate is also an option. Stuart and Walnut both work well for the reception, and the venue’s bars and additional rooms give guests somewhere to gather for drinks while the couple have a moment to themselves. From a photography point of view, smaller weddings here are never short of variety — the building itself gives us so much to work with regardless of guest numbers.

Private Celebrations at Coombe Abbey
As well as weddings, Coombe Abbey is a stunning setting for private celebrations of all kinds — christenings, anniversaries, milestone birthdays and more. If you’re planning an event at the venue and would like it photographed, we’d love to hear from you.

About Coombe Abbey
Coombe Abbey has its origins in the 12th century, when it was founded as a Cistercian monastery and became the largest and most influential abbey in Warwickshire. After the dissolution of the monasteries it passed through various hands, including a connection to the Gunpowder Plot and a stint as home to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James I. The Craven family owned the estate for around 300 years, during which time Capability Brown redesigned the grounds. The hotel opened in 1995 and today sits within a 500-acre country park on the edge of Coventry.
